Dr. McAleese served as President of Ireland between 1997 and 2011 becoming the second woman to do so and first from Ulster. During her presidency she addressed justice, social equality, anti-sectarianism and building bridges with the Unionist community in Northern Ireland. She is a leading lawyer, academic and advocate for LGBT rights.
