The Durham Union Society was formed in 1848 to foster debate and friendships between members. By joining the Union you become a part of our rich history, whether you were elected to a committee, debated competitively for Durham or attended our socials.

Alumni Life members continue to enjoy the benefits of membership after graduating, attending speaker events and debates, using the bar, and attending pre-event dinners.

The purpose of the 1842 Club (the Alumni Association) is to expand this over 180 year-old mission, encouraging Union members who have left Durham to stay involved. All members are also eligible for reciprocal membership to the Oxford and Cambridge unions.

The Durham Union creates a termly newsletter to help our Alumni seat in touch. See the latest issue of our Alumni Newsletter here.

Alumni Mentorship

In Michaelmas 2024 the Union announced its Alumni Mentorship Program. A first-of-its-kind initiative that connects members with our distinguished alumni in the top echelons of their career fields. With mentors from Parliament, top investment banks and law firms, and more, the Durham Union offers its members the opportunity to meet, learn from, and work with professionals.

Students are paired with an alumnus in their interested career field and can build a relationship, gain advice and develop an understanding of their industry.
