Thursday, 17th November: Sir Roderic Lyne Address.

In 2009, Sir Roderic Lyne was selected along with Sir John Chilcot to lead an inquiry into the Iraq War, the long-awaited report was published in July of this year. The panel spent hundreds of hours interviewing prominent figures involved in the decision to go to war and the subsequent military action.

A former British ambassador to Russia, Sir Roderic will discuss the lessons of Iraq and the findings of the Chilcot Inquiry.

Friday, 18th November: This House Would Renew the Trident Nuclear Deterrent.

PROPOSITION:

Phil Wilson, M.P. – Labour Member of Parliament for Sedgefield since 2007, succeeding Tony Blair. Currently sits on the Defence Select Committee.

Sebastian Payne – Digital Comment editor at the Financial Times and former Online Editor at the Spectator. A Durham Union alumnus.

OPPOSITION:

Crispin Blunt, M.P. – Conservative Member of Parliament for Reigate and Chair of the Foreign Affairs Select Committee. In 2016, he was the only Conservative M.P. to vote against a motion calling for the renewal of Trident.

Brendan O'Hara, M.P. – S.N.P. Member of Parliament for Argyll and Bute since 2015. He is currently the party's defence spokesman in the House of Commons.
